Bringing home a new puppy is one of the most exciting moments of your life. It's also one of the most overwhelming - and the first seven days set the tone for everything that follows.
We've helped thousands of new dog owners navigate that chaotic, wonderful first week. Here's what you actually need to do, buy, and know before your pup arrives.
Before Day 1: Puppy-Proof Your Home
- Secure loose cables and cords
- Remove toxic plants
- Lock away cleaning supplies and medications
- Block off stairs or hazardous areas
- Set up a safe den area
Essential Gear You Need on Day 1
- Appropriately-sized crate
- Food and water bowls (stainless steel)
- Collar with ID tag and leash
- Puppy food appropriate for their age and breed
- Enzymatic cleaner
- A few safe chew toys
Day 1: Arrival Day
The first day is about calm, not excitement. Your puppy is overwhelmed by new smells, sounds, and faces.
- Keep greetings low-energy
- Let your puppy explore their designated area on their own terms
- Introduce the crate immediately as a positive place
- Start your feeding schedule from day one
Days 2-3: First Vet Visit
Schedule your first vet appointment within the first 72 hours if possible.
Days 4-7: Building Routine
Potty Training
Take your puppy outside: first thing in the morning, after every meal, after every nap, before bed, and every 1-2 hours in between.
First Training Steps
Start with one cue: Sit. Five reps, three times a day. Keep sessions under 5 minutes.
