Before You Start: What NOT to Use
- Xylitol (in many sugar-free peanut butters - always check the label)
- Grapes and raisins
- Chocolate or cocoa powder
- Onions and garlic
- Macadamia nuts
- Avocado
Recipe 1: Classic Peanut Butter Training Treats
Makes ~40 treats | 15 min | Beginner
Ingredients: 1 cup whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup xylitol-free peanut butter, 1/4 cup water, 1 egg
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350F. Mix all ingredients into a dough. Roll to 1/4 inch thick, cut into small pieces. Bake 12-15 minutes until golden. Storage: airtight container up to 5 days, fridge 2 weeks, freezer 3 months.
Recipe 2: Frozen Peanut Butter Banana Popsicles
Makes 6 popsicles | 5 min active + freezing | Beginner
Ingredients: 2 ripe bananas, 1/4 cup xylitol-free peanut butter, 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (unsweetened)
Instructions: Blend all ingredients until smooth. Pour into ice cube trays. Freeze 4+ hours. Great for hot weather - calorie-dense, limit to 1-2 cubes based on dog size.
Recipe 3: Sweet Potato Chews
Makes ~20 chews | 5 min active + 3 hours oven time | Beginner
Ingredients: 2 medium sweet potatoes
Instructions: Preheat oven to 250F. Slice sweet potatoes lengthwise into 1/4-inch strips. Bake 3 hours, flipping halfway, until chewy but not hard.
Recipe 4: Chicken and Sweet Potato Training Drops
Makes ~60 pea-sized treats | 20 min | Beginner
Ingredients: 1 cup cooked chicken breast (no seasoning), 1/2 cup sweet potato puree, 1 egg, 1.25 cups whole wheat flour
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350F. Blend chicken until fine. Mix with remaining ingredients. Drop 1/2 teaspoon portions. Bake 12-15 minutes until firm.
Recipe 5: No-Bake Peanut Butter Oat Energy Balls
Makes ~20 balls | 10 min | Beginner
Ingredients: 1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup xylitol-free peanut butter, 2 tbsp honey, 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (optional)
Instructions: Mix all ingredients. Roll into small balls. Refrigerate 30 minutes. Storage: fridge up to 1 week.
